Understanding Endometriosis: What You Need to Know

Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. It commonly affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis. While it can be challenging, understanding endometriosis and its symptoms is the first step toward managing it.

Symptoms:

Endometriosis symptoms vary, but common signs include:

  • Pelvic Pain: Often severe, especially during menstruation, intercourse, or bowel movements.
  • Heavy Periods: Increased menstrual flow or bleeding between periods.
  • Infertility: Endometriosis is one of the leading causes of infertility.
  • Digestive Issues: Bloating, constipation, or diarrhea, especially during menstruation.

While pain is the most common symptom, some women may have mild or no symptoms, making diagnosis challenging.

Diagnosis:

Endometriosis is often diagnosed through a combination of:

  • Medical History and Symptoms: Discussion of your symptoms and menstrual history.
  • Pelvic Exam: A physical exam to check for abnormalities.
  • Ultrasound or MRI: Imaging tests to identify endometrial growths.
  • Laparoscopy: A surgical procedure where a small camera is inserted into the pelvic cavity to directly view and diagnose endometriosis.

Treatment:

While there is no cure for endometriosis, treatments are available to manage symptoms:

  • Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen, or prescription pain relievers.
  • Hormonal Therapies: The oral contraceptive pill, IUDs, or hormone therapy to reduce or stop menstrual periods and limit endometrial growth.
  • Surgery: In severe cases, laparoscopic surgery may be performed to remove endometrial tissue.
